Wabush – There is Light

There is Light

This is a portrait of the iron ore mine at which  I worked during my thirty years in Wabush, it is Scully Mines, and as it is with other mines, there are always times of low demand for the product. These periods bring with it hard times for the employees and their families.

There have been good times that made life easy and everything was in abundance, however, from 2007 through to 2012 the iron mining industry was on a downward spiral and a shutdown was inevitable. The mine did close in 2012 as predicted. This closure continued through to 2019 and the market began to pickup.

Then in 2019 there were talks of  going back into operation, some people were skeptical but sure enough it reopened to everyone’s joy.

After all the years of doom and gloom there was hope of return of the good times.

I did this scene to commemorate the re-opening of the mine after years of downtime and doom and gloom in the industry, “THERE IS LIGHT”.

I included this portrait with this theme because it is human nature to survive.
