Labrador Icons

During my thirty years in Labrador my wife Rosie and I have made several trips to the Labrador coast. Let me tell you that each trip was an adventure to be remembered with joy.

The scenery was fantastic, as we entered and toured communities along the coast, it was mind warping in a great way.

These trips were on The Sir Robert Bond, “The Bond” as us Newfies affectionately referred to her. This ship has millions of stories attached to her over the forty plus years that she serviced the Labrador run, a trip of two nights. Along this run you would see icebergs, and lots of wildlife, it was always astounding and memorable.

When we were not site-seeing we would be in the galley having lunch or in the lounge having a few drinks and entertainment. There was always somebody that had an accordion or guitar, music was continuous. We were fortunate to have the Mummers (also called Jannies) on board during one trip. Mummers are people dressed in traditional disguises with a musical stick called the Ugly Stick , a lot of fun.

While getting a beer at the bar I heard a scream and immediately knew it was Rosie screaming, I turned and spotted Rosie, several Mummers were chasing her with a bowl of shaving cream and a shaving brush. She escaped from them and hid behind me, it was a total blast, everybody was laughing..

I painted this portrait of “Labrador Icons”, with The Bond, The Northern Ranger,  an Iceberg and a Polar Bear swimming so that you could see our beautiful land as we see it.
