Moose at Jean lake
I arrived in Wabush in October of 1977, and as was my nature, I almost immediately began exploring the country around Wabush on my weekends and whenever time would permit me.
There was an abundance of wildlife that I frequently encountered; lots of rabbits, ptarmigan, beaver, wolves, and numerous south-bound species of water fowl. Caribou and black bears were in abundance, but for the first several years I never encountered any moose in the area around Wabush.
However, in the Fall of 1986 while traveling my rabbit snaring line, twenty-five miles East of Wabush, I spotted two moose on a bog and realized that moose were beginning to come into this area possibly from the Caniapiscau River area in Quebec.
It wasn’t until several years later in August of 2003, that during a late evening paddle around Jean Lake on the West side of Wabush that I came across two moose leisurely standing in the water a short distance from the shoreline.
It was the most amazing and surprising sight to come upon so close to Wabush, it turned into a bit of a thrill to watch as the Bull attempted to show his dominance by swiftly raising his head from the water and making a short charge in my direction.
I figured he was trying to impress his lady friend or just being a bit protective of his missus because he was still in velvet and the rutting season was still a couple of months away.
This is a portrait of a nice memory of Moose at Jean lake near Wabush, Labrador.
