Starter Shack

This portrait has been created to show a piece of the history of the town of Wabush, this town is located a little over 1000 Km northeast of Montreal, Quebec.

In 1962, a mining camp at Wabush Lake in Labrador and Newfoundland laid the foundation of what would later become the Town of Wabush, and was incorporated in 1967 as a Local Improvement District. As the town began to populate it became necessary to create recreation areas for the young population.

One of these recreation areas was a little park known as Elephant Head Park, located approximately 5 km southwest of Wabush. This park offered swimming at a little beach and there were camping and picnic sites situated all around the park.

There was a little cabin at the gate to regulate the allocation of the camp sites so that everyone had access when they desired. A very pleasant lady (Mrs. Kent) was the person in charge of this, we all looked forward to visiting with her and we enjoyed our chats.

However, all good things eventually end, so when the park finally closed down the little cabin just sat there for a few years unattended, until one day it was decided to relocate the cabin to Jean Lake next to Wabush. It then became the starter shack for the annual regatta boat races being held at Jean Lake, where the cabin still sits today. I couldn’t allow myself to not do a portrait of this piece of our history.
