Labrador Lights

There is a small town located a little over 640 miles northeast of Montreal, Quebec called Wabush in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is a close-knit mining community where everybody knows everybody.  It is a great town to raise a family.

There was always something to do in Wabush such as playing hockey, swimming at the local swimming pool, skiing in the winter, hiking, snowshoeing and we can’t forget hunting and fishing in the great wilderness areas around Wabush.

During the winter months I would do ice and snow carvings for the Christmas period and due to the extreme cold, these carvings would last all winter and were quite an attraction to sight-seers.

I wouldn’t be doing Wabush justice if I didn’t do a portrait of the town that I had lived in for 30 years, so here is one of my favorite scenes from the lookout of the Town of Wabush, with one of my favorite subjects to paint “the Northern Lights”.

It is said that the name Wabush means rabbit in the native language of the North.
