A New Friend

It was on a very clear and crisp, cold January evening when I spotted a small herd of caribou at the southwest end of a small lake in Labrador. So to get a chance to study them a little closer I snowshoed thru a point of land, and as I approached the edge of a line of trees and stood there watching the herd passing by I noticed a young pricket (small caribou).

At first he was just walking along the edge smelling the underbrush and jumping around but then he spotted me and approached rather curiously and cautiously. He wasn’t too certain what he was looking at but I imagine he assumed that I was a weird looking caribou and wanted a little closer look.

He eventually got to within a few feet of me but didn’t seem too concerned about me. Then I noticed that the herd was moving farther away so I shooed him away so he could be with the herd. At first, he didn’t seem to want to go but eventually he took off. I can only imagine what he told his buddies when he got back to the herd about the weird looking creature he had found.

This is a portrait to show the beauty of finding “A New Friend”.
