Growing up in central Newfoundland as a young person looking for objects and landscapes to sketch, one of the more colourful birds to watch were the Pine Grosbeaks. It was fascinating watching them feed because they are very docile. We have always called them Mopes on the Island of Newfoundland because of their tameness and slow-moving behaviour.
As a young fella growing up in Badger I loved drawing and painting Mopes, they are very colourful and if I were lucky enough to find them feeding on dogberries, it made for a vividly coloured scene.
They would hang around the tree tops over our heads and flit from one tree to another feeding on spruce and pine cones. They truly enjoyed each others company by gathering in little groups along the branches and in the tree tops.
I painted this portrait as a gift for my wife and it became one of her favorite portraits. I hope you enjoy this portrait as much as I did as I created it.
