The Hunt

During my travels in the north, I have often watched the tenderness of wolves as they care for their young and it is fascinating. Also, I have witnessed the vicious side of the wolves during the hunt.

Watching wolves begin the process of getting the caribou to start running is always nothing short of accelerating, the caribou are in near panic mode trying to escape from the charging wolves. The wolves know instinctively which caribou is weaker or sick and this becomes the target.

I created this portrait to illustrate just how skillfully a pack of wolves will gather and select their prey, an event that few have had the good fortune to observe. It may seem cruel to the inexperienced eye but by selecting the weakest in the herd, the wolves actually help keep the caribou herd stronger while providing for the pack.  It is a harsh reality but necessary for the survival of both.

My main purpose of this portrait is to illustrate the drama that is in nature, it is everywhere, non-stop! In this portrait I want to demonstrate how a person’s mind is constantly viewing and analyzing the wilderness surroundings – it is the Hunt.
