The Run

The Salmon Run starts in the Spring and continues through to Fall, it is an amazing and exciting event to observe.

The bears know when the run begins and will most certainly be there chasing down the salmon.

Any observer fortunate enough to be there will be in for the most adventuresome time of their lives, excitement like no other event is in store for you.

The bears are so busy chasing after the salmon and jumping into the water while grabbing for the salmon with their claws and teeth that they will pay little or no attention to any observer watching them, but don’t get too close or in the way of their pursuit!  It definitely isn’t where you should be.

The bears will primarily be after the skin and scales of the fish as the oils in these will help them put on as much fat before winter as is possible to allow them to survive the winter; the salmon are driven by an ancient instinct to get to the spawning grounds and reproduce the species.

I have witnessed the “Run” on several occasions over the years, it is an event that I never tire of seeing; added to that, watching bears in the wild is also a true passion of mine, the total acceleration of this combination is priceless.

I created this portrait; so that you will get to feel this acceleration also, however, always use extreme caution, because these are wild animals, they are also predators that likely will see you as a food source.
